MICRO-BIO SLIDES

itwp3.2.jpg (13485 bytes)

Provides quick, easy and reliable means of measuring total bacteria
Performed on a frequent basis will maximize micro-biocide program control
Minimizes cost associated with over-treatment
Bacteria counts will be maintained under 103 CFU's/ml

Samples will be tested quarterly

CORROSION COUPONS

coupon.gif (6149 bytes)

Installed in all systems
Used to profile corrosion types and rates
Run on 30-60-90 day cycles
Although spot tests are useful, IWT utilizes a continuing program to determine trends and recognize changes within the system

CORRATOR MONITORING USING LINEAR POLARIZATION

itwp3.3.jpg (5026 bytes)ABOUT LINEAR POLARIZATION

Linear Polarization is used to provide instantaneous corrosion rates. Corrosion measurement by linear polarization uses the theoretical relationship between a metal's freely corroding potential and current density and actual corrosion rate. The current density required to shift a metal's freely corroding potential by 10-25 M is directly proportional to the corrosion occurring in local anode-cathode cells. The resulting average current flow is quantitatively proportional to the instantaneous corrosion rate of the metal electrodes, once they are acclimated to the system. A semi-quantitative estimation of pitting tendency is indicated by the difference between the two measurements

INSTRUMENTS PRESENTLY AVAILABLE

Two electrode system - must be compensated for water conductivity
Three electrode system - does not need compensation for water conductivity

ADVANTAGES OF LINEAR POLARIZATION

By providing measurement of the corrosion rate occurring at the time of measurement it delivers an excellent means of trouble-shooting a corrosion problem or establishing programs to minimize corrosion
To take full advantage of this capability, measurements must be taken frequently and results plotted or the output recorded instrumentally

DR-2000 SPECTROPHOTOMETER

itwp3.4.jpg (9498 bytes)Several years ago we made a commitment to our customers to take the complexity out of testing program parameters.  Keeping to this commitment we will provide the C.U.P.'s operators with a Hach-DR-2000 spectrophotometer.  Closer more accurate monitoring is a key factor in spotting dangerous trends, which could affect the efficiency and reliability of the plant.

This instrument allows us to take advantage of some new testing technology reducing analysis time and operator handling of reagents.  Often times the reagents are more dangerous to handle than the treatment chemicals.

The DR-2000 has been used extensively to provide monitoring over our cooling and boiler water programs.  This has allowed tighter control resulting in lower chemical costs.

LEGIONELLA TESTING

itwp3.5.jpg (11981 bytes)The only way to assess the potential for a system to be a source for Legionnaires disease and assess disinfection efficacy is to perform environmental cultures and send them to a laboratory with experience in Legionella environment detection.   IWT personnel will collect samples from the towers twice per year, June and September.

These samples will then be shipped next day air to a certified lab where the samples will be cultured for the actual Legionella Bacteria Sero group 1. Some laboratories are doing a presumptive test, which is inconclusive and misleading.

MILLIPORE PROFILES

A measured amount of liquid is filtered through a 0.45 micron ceramic filter.   these filters can be used as a qualitative method of measuring suspended solids loading on various water systems.  B&W has published a color chart for predicting iron loading on industrial boiler systems using this tool.  As with corrosion coupons, these filters can be used to determine trends and recognize changes within the system.
